cant really be much help as looks like X changed a bit in the latest
Ubuntu and i only just noticed because of your post. But the following
two links may help
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1548547
Sounds like you can still create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file like normal
so if you have a backup of your old working xorg.conf you could try
using that
also that /usr/share/x11 should be /usr/share/X11 (capital X)
sounds like multiple .conf files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could help me resolve a fairly key issue;
at the moment I'm unable to increase my screen resolution beyond 800x600.
its
making things pretty difficult for me and I haven't a clue how to fix
it. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and have enclosed a link for .txt file
containing all the data gathered by DxDiag in windows about my
computer's hardware.
I started a thread on ubuntu forums about the issue, but am yet to get a
response.
Ralph
suggested running a few commands through the terminal to give some info
about my setup, which i posted in the thread. said thread can be found
here - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1678725
I
wouldn't be bringing all this up except i attempted a fix i found online
for my issue, however got very confused being unable to find an
xorg.conf in /usr/share/x11 (i'm unsure if thats relevant). and i ended
up having to re-install ubuntu after royally screwing it up, and i'm
getting just a tad annoyed ¬_¬
If anyone could help resolve this
issue or point me in the right direction for finding a fix it would be
ridiculously greatly appreciated.
oh, and i have an SIS Mirage 3 graphics card.
