Operating System' or something of that ilk. No Grub menu, nothing.
Any idea what went wrong?

Sounds like the boot records are the 2nd drive, With the 2nd drive
removed. You should be able to boot from a live CD and select the rescue
option then pick reinstall grub (Thats how I would do it on Ubuntu, I
guess Kubuntu would be the same)
