You are absolutely right Keith, but once one is in the situation without a system to work on, it's not easy. The Error Message was actually "Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and press Enter". Try as I might with grub-repair and re-installing XP on the first partition I couldn't get anywhere. I pulled the disk and discovered the jumper in a slot for "master disk, slave disk present". I have not seen this jumper position before (except probably when I first installed the disk), so changed it to "Master (single disk)" and now am up and running, having re-installed XP, and then re-installed Kubuntu, and now in the middle of all the Kubuntu updates.
