I'm sorry that my earlier warnings about Oneiric were mis-numbered as
10.10. Actually, 10.10 (Maverick) was probably the most stable Ubuntu
release!

Here's another short dispatch from the bleeding edge.

I am running the stock 11.10 now on four machines; two were fresh
installs and two were upgrades. The fresh installs have been fine for
the most part. The upgrades were both problematic as I documented in my
earlier, mis-numbered posting. I have found another solution for the
upgrades which anyone mad enough to try Oneiric may find useful: I
switched from the new lightdm display manager back to gdm. They are now
both pretty stable, and with the new kernel hibernate / suspend are
working properly for the first time on all four machines.

The new desktops Unity and Gnome3 both work well for those (like my
wife) who prefer all their windows maximized and who use relatively few
different programs - it's easy enough to get all the icons on to the
launcher. The new style minimized scrollbars take some getting used-to,
but with familiarity they do a good job of maximizing useful screen
real-estate, and when working with an IDE such as Eclipse, Komodo etc.
this pays dividends.

I hope to bring my laptop on Tuesday week to give the curious a low-risk
glimpse of Canonical's new baby!

Regards to all,

CPKS
