Well. I eventually found the page; it's at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1169149. What I can't understand is why the default smb.conf file doesn't include some of the entries recommended at that page. Obviously without some kind of automatic config tool, it isn't possible for the samba installer to know the workgroup or netbios name, but some of the rest seems generic to me. For example, what worked for me was the fix outlined in Problem 3, Part 1. I didn't have to do Part 2, because winbind was already installed, but why not add the 'wins' entry by default?
