What I can't understand is why (K)(X)Ubuntu doesn't work 'out of the box'.  I 
first did this some time ago and yet it would appear that the process has to 
be repeated for V 12.10.

I would have thought that the Ubuntu developers would have done all this by 
now.  After all they claim that Linux is easier to set up than Windows these 
days and by and large I would agree.  This bit lets it down.
