Hi All
Well I did get to the pub and Terry came round yesterday and sorted most
of my network problems - Thank you very much Terry and glad you've
sorted your problem.
Last night I tried to finish one thing that wee could not do while Terry
was with me, but that has raised another problem!!
While sorting the the network out another 'User' was created called
'Comment', why & how don't know; it did not appear to have any reason or
affect on/to what we were doing and we agreed I could delete it later.
Much later I checked that all was well, I could see all the network and
was pleased.
I then deleted the bogus 'User' and carried on with a game of Marjonng.
A little later before closing down I checked my emails - no emails, no
account, no Thunderbird only the calendar; no tool bars, no address
book, nothing. So I closed down Thunderbird and checked my files -
nothing. My 'Home' directory is completely empty! Checking login and the
picture is not my default but the one the 'Comments' user had, although
my usual login password logged me into this empty area!
Any ideas as to what has happened please and is it possible to get back
my original 'Home' directory? I have not booted the laptop up since
this happened and not saved any files since Terry left.
Should I boot from a live disk and see if I can find the old 'Home'
directory?
This email is sent from my desktop machine which I'm going to use until
someone can help.

Hi All
I may not make tomorrows meeting as I have another meeting starting at
6pm, don't know how long it will go on for.
If I'm not there could anyone living within Wimborne area and has a
good knowledge of networking, and would be willing to visit me to help
sort out my network problem please get in touch off list.
As Terry suggested (last meeting) I found a GUI front end for SAMBA
but did not understand some terminology used. I think I may need to
start from scratch again but that would be very time consuming for me
and I still would not know what was being asked for!
For info I have a Netgear dual band router, 2x1Gb NAS (Netgear Duo
V2), Print server, desktop and a laptop computer (both Linux) and
finally a new Panasonic 'smart' TV. It all works individually but I
can not get them all to 'talk' to each other. E.g. can't see any
pictures on TV from the backup HD, nor can I get to any files on the
other computers. Tv gets onto Web OK via wireless router.
Not affecting the above but my Back-up HD has just stopped working so
'lost' all old info, think it's a relay not switching the HD on. (this
was connected directly to the routers USB ).
Have not put anything on the list as I'm not sure how to describe the
problems and provide the technical info, nor do I know what is causing
the problem. Something (Samba?) keeps asking for a Workgroup password
but none of the ones I give it are correct and I'm going round in
circles.
I really wanted to ask 'face to face' at the meeting as it's so long
winded trying to explain what's wrong in words.
Hope I do get to the pub tomorrow.
