Their help desk suggested I use the full link to edit the destination

Or, backtrack, and give John's simpler and more efficient CNAME solution
a try. :-)

That page has a warning that I would lose my email settings if I altered the C record. Since 1and1 provides me with the primary email address, I wouldn't want that!

So: having made the suggested change,
https://share.gemmill.name/owncloud
gives me an "Unable to connect" message.
However,
http://share.gemmill.name/owncloud
takes me to the Owncloud login page. I have asked someone external to try it out; perhaps you would like to try it and let me know what happens.
Thanks again
Graeme
Cheers, Ralph.
