Instead of making backups when you log in, surely it's better to do it
just before you log out, i.e. as immediately as possible (and take the
backup medium to another place, forthwith).  Who knows what may happen
while you're *not* logged in (whether the machine be running or not).

Myself I use rsync for my own and my wife's backups, following a
recommendation long ago by someone on this list.  Many thanks to that
person, whoever that was.  John
