I think I mentioned during the last online meeting, that my mother recently passed away. While trying to clear up her affairs, I discovered that her ISP required £210 to close the Account early. This isn’t quite as bad as it sounds, but they were able to do it because I was the Account holder on her behalf.

To cut a long story short, a compromise was reached, whereby I signed up to a new contract for myself, with a new 24 month durations, in return for not having to pay the fee (we already received our broadband from the same company, with 5 months left on the contract).

All this was OK, except that the company no longer sells landlines, and Lynn prefers a landline, over a mobile (she also often forgets to charge her mobile). The upshot was that the new contract comes with a digital phone connection (VOIP by any other name, except we get to keep our landline number).

There is one fly in the ointment; what happens if the power fails? The ISP sells a 'Phone Battery Backup' device, but it costs £149 and only keeps the phone going for an hour.

So are there any Digital Phone Line experts here who can tell me if an ordinary UPS plugged into the Router will be OK? The official devices appear to be slightly different in that the Router plugs into the device via a (I assume) PoE connection, rather than the Router being provided with mains power directly. A casual search shows that a UPS providing at least 4 or 5 times the endurance can be had for less than £100.

Have I missed something?
