Hi,

I've been meaning to mention this on the list for a while,
but I'm swamped by emails at the moment so I'll keep this brief.

There's a new Linux distro for PCs available spelt ‘Omarchy’.
No, I've no idea how it's said other than the ‘r’ is silent.
O-mack-ee? Omer-shee? Don't know.

It's an ‘opinionated’ set-up by David Heinemeier Hansson, more easily
referred to as ‘dhh’. He's well known alongside Jason Fried for 37
Signals, Basecamp, Ruby on Rails, hey.com email, ... It's based on Arch
Linux, but is aimed at Mac users who favour well-polished bling with
their wallet. dhh wanted to move from Apples, and this was the Linux
distro he made, helped by AI LLMs.

Wayland is used for graphics, with the Hyprland tiling window manager,
and Quickshell for constructing the desktop from QML, so textual, files.
An ISO is available for installation, or just having a play by putting
it onto a USB stick then booting from it.

Having ‘worked in public’ for a while, dhh chipped $1M into a new
Omacom Foundation along with seven of his chums to make $8M.

    dhh
    Jason Fried, CEO of 37signals
Jack Dorsey, Block Head and Chairman of Block, was Twitter
    Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe
Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies
    Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify
    Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare
Brendan Iribe, co-founder of Sesame and Oculus

And another couple have signalled virtue since: $10M.

Drew Houston, co-founder and co-CEO of Dropbox
    Peter Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw

The Foundation is funding more contributors, and the underlying software
like Hyprland. It's determined, knowing the old in-joke, that 2026 is
going to be the year of Linux on the desktop.

I haven't tried Omarchy. But for those that like his taste in Ruby on
Rails, Basecamp, or hey.com, or who just like to try shiny new things,
it's probably worth a look. https://omarchy.org

Or if you've an old Apple Intel-based machine, it targets those too.

In time, I think their plan is to spread into aarch64, e.g. the
Raspberry Pi 5.

Cheers, Ralph.
