Thanks for the info Ralph and I'll try those out later, when things get quieter and let you know the outcome.
Must make a note of those as it may be good to do every now and again.
I thought that the upgrades would remove old files they were replacing?
Still learning but now forgetting short term actions!
Miss the old times getting together as it was informative talking even if it was 'above my head' odd things did help; also miss the 'Linux Format' mag as that kept me informed too. Never mind, life goes on and we are still driving to Switzerland twice a year but not sure for how much longer.
Thanks.

That's the list of files I was trying to explain!  :)
As Tim H suggested, you could see if many of them are no longer
dependencies of anything by seeing if they're listed as the packages to
remove by:

     sudo -i apt-get autoremove --purge

(I tend to use --purge to remove configuration files too.)

That may well cause many of them to be removed, freeing disk space,
apart from the one you're booting from, and one or two previous ones in
case they're needed to recover.

Other commands which will clear space taken by package files, which may
be sitting in your root partition, are:

     sudo -i apt-get autoclean
     sudo -i apt-get clean
