For reference, running sudo du -sh /var/log on my PC returns a folder size of 3.9gb (maybe I need to do a little pruning)

Hi Clive,

For example, my /etc/logrotate.conf includes:

      # rotate log files weekly
      weekly
# keep 4 weeks worth of backlogs
      rotate 4
Checked my Logrotate.conf and it's same as yours:-
Okay.

But unless ‘sudo du -sh /var/log’ suggests /var/log is a particular
disk hog, then Clive will probably achieve enough space savings with
his kernel clean-up. And that's something which will grow forever
otherwise.
Here's the result on this machine:

     $ sudo du -sh /var/log
     48M /var/log
     $

If I was trying to increase the 1 GB of free space, deleting a fraction
of 48 MiB wouldn't really help as it's only 5% to start with. But if it
was a significant amount then:

- I'd wonder why; what's producing the bigger log files?
- I'd consider shortening the ‘rotate 4’ by a week or two.

But as I said, it's the kernel left-overs which are always going to grow
long term so I'd tackle them first.
