Its not like 10 years ago, when you could meet people with 2.0 kernels and 2.6 kernels on a same day. Right now most people are up-to-date, more or less. The distros are mostly up-to-date, as well. Any dependancy mismatch should be caught and properly shown by configure. So if there is still a point of keeping that part of the doc, I am not aware of it. Also, most programmers these days are sloppy about compatibility with the oldish environments, see the latest wars in an udev camp, for instance. When I code, I never care about some egcs or kernel-2.4. I have not hesitated to depend on a cvs version of timidity, for instance. So my proposal is to just get rid of this. 'configure' should be enough for the hints, and we have a runtime checks too that are saying "your kernel is too bad".
Ideally, we should be able to re-visit the documentation and get rid of all the legacy, but this is unlikely to happen. :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ LogMeIn Rescue: Anywhere, Anytime Remote support for IT.
