Not that I have a strong opinion on that, but
how about just removing this?
Its not like 10 years ago, when you could meet
people with 2.0 kernels and 2.6 kernels on a same day.
Right now most people are up-to-date, more or less.
The distros are mostly up-to-date, as well.
Any dependancy mismatch should be caught and
properly shown by configure.
So if there is still a point of keeping that part of the
doc, I am not aware of it.
Also, most programmers these days are sloppy
about compatibility with the oldish environments, see
the latest wars in an udev camp, for instance.
When I code, I never care about some egcs or kernel-2.4.
I have not hesitated to depend on a cvs version of
timidity, for instance.
So my proposal is to just get rid of this. 'configure'
should be enough for the hints, and we have a runtime
checks too that are saying "your kernel is too bad".

Ideally, we should be able to re-visit the documentation
and get rid of all the legacy, but this is unlikely to happen. :)
