Jack,

There is a difference between Visual Studio versions and .NET
Framework versions. When you say ".NET 2005", I assume you're
referring to Visual Studio 2005 and .NET Framework 2.0. I'm providing
a couple links below for your reference:

.NET Framework System Requirements (starting with 2.0):
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229070(VS.80).aspx

Visual Studio System Requirements (starting with v2005) :
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/4c26cc39(VS.80).aspx

At this point, I think there are some compatibility issues between
Visual Studio 2005, .NET 2.0, and 64-bit Vista. Don't get too caught
up about it being the Home Premium edition either. Below is a link
comparing each edition of Windows Vista.

As for OS suggestions, it really depends how you plan on using your
operating system during development and personal preferences. I
suggest getting a few trial versions of prospective OS's and
installing them on virtual machines and just playing around with
them. I'm including a link to Microsoft Virtual PC below.

Good luck!
