Is it possible for you to do a small activex control to invoke the app on the client? this way you can sign your activex cab/binary and still have the control installed with default IE settings (although there will be a confirmation prompt that the user has to accept). An issue still lingers even with this solution - how do you prevent other sites/unauthorized-users from instantiating this activex control and launching this app? A quickfire (fairly, not fully airtight) solution is to devise a temporal checksum that your site will send in to this control/method; after verification your control can decide to launch the app. As you can see, there is a bit of extra dev work involved in this method compared against the hacky and insecure registry/IE security modification method; but I am sure you understand that as a software professional (not just a developer but as a "professional") it is our Duty to deliver a fully functional and secure product to the customer. And it is our customers' Right to demand one. My 2 cents. Thanks, Chandra Chivukula |
