The native image cache is a reserved area of the global assembly cache which stores the native images of the assemblies. Native image of an assembley is a file containing compiled processor-specific machine code.
Native image can be generated using nGen.exe provided with .NET Framework SDK.
It basically compiles the managed assembley, creates a native image from it and
installs it into the native image cache.
The ultimate impact is that startup time is reduced as it is already compiled and no JIT compilation is needed. CLR restores code and data structures from the native image cache. But the disadvantage is that this cannot be shared across Application Domains such as ASP.NET, that require assemblies to be shared across application domains.
