Hello all of you, For this new year, as our team has grown quite a lot, I will try to regularly release an information mail to let all of you know what's up with the project. I plan to publish on a weekly basis but this may not be always the case, because some weeks may be quiet or because I may not be available to do this job ;).
For this first mail of a series, I would like to share with you events and activities of our different contributors for a scope a bit larger than a week. Because this is the first mail, but also because the end of the year introduced a break in our activities. Of course I may have missed something but you'll see that I gathered much information though. Team ==== * We recently welcomed Denis, Yago, Benheng and Richard. Less recently we welcomed Marija. * I've been in touch with Riccardo, Tolga and Trevor for few weeks on communication topics. Riccardo (Linuxaria) can't join the team but agrees to publish news from our project regularly. Tolga may join the team to start translating into Turkish. Trevor is still active to find target websites for advertising (English), member of the team or not! * Yago talked about our project to one of his friend who draws comics. He may join us to start improving the CD artwork. We are impatient to see some samples (he won several awards). * I recently received an email from a Portuguese who may join the team too, to start translating into Portuguese. Wait and see… Translations ============ * I recently received PO files for Chinese and Dutch. * Many Serbian pages were published before Christmas, I've just uploaded the corresponding PDF documentation (see http://www.doudoulinux.org/web/english/documentation-7/). * Jay started to translate Spip into Serbian since this was necessary for our project. * Yago started to help translate the website into Spanish. Discussions arose concerning the word to use: computador (Latin America) or ordenador (Spain)? * Richard started proofreading the English pages. He can do this for Spanish too. * Sergey is in touch with some of his colleagues from the Tomsk university to have students work on translations for German, Polish and Ukrainian. Fresh news to come soon. * TransiFex seems to be more responsive with the new year. I now let people choose between the old fashion way (email PO files) and the cutting-edge way (use TransiFex online). CDROM ===== * Tests are on the go (Richard) for extra tools dedicated to LiveCD's: Unetbootin and Linux LiveUSB. Note that Trevor also registered our CD at MultiCD, a tool to put several LiveCD's on a single DVD (cool to put several languages of DDL on a DVD). * Sergey wrote a test procedure that students at Tomsk university will use to validate the CD functioning: applications, installation but also tools like persistence. * Sergey also started to talk with a pedagogy specialist (still from Tomsk university). This will give us indications on how to group activities for a given age and how to show them. * Richard agreed to start implementing a simple tool to set date and time in DDL. * I had contacts with the author of Gamine after the Linuxaria interview. He published a new version that works with PO files for translation (solves https://gna.org/bugs/?16895). He also agreed to support us if we decide to ship this new version with DDL instead of the official Debian version. * I plan to contact the author of Vkeybd for the same kind of operation. * I'm also in touch with the author of Pysycache who released an alpha version. We may decide to include a new version in DDL if he also agrees to support us directly, but not for 2011-02. * The first Chinese CD has been built, it is available in our new dailybuild section (http://download.doudoulinux.org/dailybuild/livecd/doudoulinux-2011-01-zh_CN.iso). Website ======= * I installed an online social bookmark tool. The main idea is to centralize a list of website where we can advertise, in any language. I'm testing it with Trevor and I'll tell you more when we're ready. * I also installed a small online tool to easily share any file up to 20MB. It is already available for use: http://share.doudoulinux.org/ – don't put restrictively copyrighted work! :p * I opened a Latin Serbian section in Spip (Cyrillic was already available). We're looking for an automated way to transliterate the Cyrillic section into the Latin one. * Stats are high! We've reached 6TB of downloads yesterday. I'll write a dedicated message – the monthly stats. In the meanwhile, look at the visitor map that has recently been actualized: http://www3.clustrmaps.com/fr/counter/maps.php?user=42cb8840 * I published news about Dutch and Chinese translations that started. Communication ============= * Richard started to introduce DDL at the Ministry of Education in Venezuela. Cross fingers! * The TV report on TV Tomsk is being subtitled. A new page will be soon available in the section “Tell the world”. * An interview was published on Linuxaria in mid December (see http://www.doudoulinux.org/web/english/breve/interview-in-linuxaria). It lead to an entry in Linux Today and several articles in Italia. This operation attracted about 500 new visitors and 60-70 GB downloaded. But still no Italian contributor :(. * Tolga Balci published an article on HubFolio “Doudou Linux: The Computer Kids Prefer!” (see http://www.brighthub.com/hubfolio/tolga-balci/reviews/100698.aspx). Unfortunately it seemed to have low effect likely due to the publication date (Dec. 26th). * I sent a submission for DDL on DistroWatch on Jan. 3rd. Despite we're only on the waiting list, this lead to 30-50 additional visitors per day with 10-15 GB downloaded. * WebUpd8 published an article you should now all know (see http://www.webupd8.org/2011/01/doudoulinux-linux-distribution.html). It lead to another entry in Linux Today and had echoes in at least 5 other countries. As of writing this attracted around 1750 additional visitors and 400 GB downloaded. * As a consequence of WebUpd8, a Chinese article was published on CSDN: http://blog.csdn.net/yuanmeng001/archive/2011/01/08/6123820.aspx (Google gives an understandable translation). According to Benheng: “The site is the top one IT community in China, and the author is a famous columnist”. VisualizeTraffic reports 2,000,000 daily visitors! * Still thanks to WebUpd8, Portuguese articles were published and attracted nearly 500 visitors from Brazil and Portugal while very few had come before. Final words =========== This beginning of year is looking like a sunny summer day with a large rainbow on the horizon.
