Hello! It's been a long time the weekly newsletter hasn't been published, hope you were not missing it too much :). The most noticeable event of this letter is Genesi partnership, which started 2 weeks ago. Gérald has now received our first 3 smartbooks. We are of course eager to see DDL on ARM, be patient, there is still a lot of work… The next noticeable event to come is undoubtedly our new development release 2011-11 with animated boot.
All the best, JM. PS: if you think that I forgot to mention an important news, feel free to answer this mail with your scoop! Team ===== * Steven asked to join the French team. * Maxaziat (Хушбахт Усмонов) asked to create a Tadjik team. Welcome to our project! Organization =========== * You can't miss it: Genesi partnership has started to help us move to ARM processors [1]. They've already shipped us ARM smartbooks [2] and should also provide us with some support to have their hardware perfectly function on Debian/armhf (it already works on Debian/armel). * I'm in touch with Andrew Lee, the LXDE Debian team manager. I explained him our way to use LXDE components and what we'd like to do [3]. He showed lot of interest in our work and plans, and proposed us to join the LXDE team efforts in a way that is to be discussed :). * I'm also in touch with Intrigeri, the main developer (and maybe founder) of the Tails distribution [4], a Live CD based on Debian. They seem to make a more advanced use of Debian live tools and they are dealing with issues we are facing or will face (eg. showing a dialog to choose language on a single DDL DVD). Intrigeri may help our project in a near future :), he already helped our Debian bug reports progress. * We now have 4 people willing to participate into IRC meetings (Elisa, Gérald, Gaurav and me). I have to make up my mind and find a first discussion topic, not Genesi only since we already had two meetings about Genesi [5]. The reason is that it hasn't been designed to be translated but, looking at its source code, this may not be a huge task. * On Transifex “website-squelettes” [2] has been updated and “gnome-media” [3] has been created. Please note that there won't be translations for the development release before March in my latest schedule arrangement. As we're no more speaking of the Live CD only (remember, ARM samrtbooks :) ), I think it's better to call it “Development”. * We organized 2 IRC meetings about Genesi partnership [1]. I still haven't found the time to write a short report but I will do. Very shortly, this is a fantastic opportunity since Genesi made the Debian port called armhf, an optimization of the official armel port bringing around 30% performance gain. * I set up a Debian source package repository [2]. It'll be useful for Debian folks to fetch our patches of standard Debian packages, as well as Gérald to work on ARM (see below). * Gérald has started to look at how to set up an automated process to build binary Debian packages from source packages. This will ease our work since we're going to have 4 target architectures: i386, amd64, armel and armhf. * Gérald started to hack Genesi devices :). We're willing to first port DDL using Debian Squeeze/armel (the less efficient ARM port), then Debian Wheezy/armhf (the most efficient one). Currently Wheezy/armhf is not perfectly supported on Genesi but they're working on this. * I rearranged our list of tasks for 2011-11 again and again because we're more and more late :( [3]. The coming development release should land in early December with several improvements [4]. * The first dailybuilds of 2011-11 have landed and are updated from time to time [5]. Please fetch one of them, test and report! * We may need to replace Stopmotion with Luciole in the future [6][7]. However Luciole seems to be using patented codecs, which makes it hard to install on Debian. If you have an Ubuntu box, please try to install it and tell us about its ease of use compared to Stopmotion (it is developed on Ubuntu). * I posted instructions on how to report a bug to Debian [8]. I'll turn this into a page on our website later :). Expect to see something very soon :). * I sent 2 examples of what we can do with free contents for our CD or our website: short stories to read or short stopmotion movies [1]. The movie was performed with the help of my children :). * I'm looking for someone to make a nice boot animation now that Plymouth seems to work on DDL 2011-11 [2]. A team work is possible too and even recommended :). We're now rated 5/10 instead of 4/10 previously. Not a big jump but 5/10 is really satisfying for our still young project :). * New Malay articles from PureTech: “Menggunakan rangkaian”, “Tip dan trik”, “Memasang DoudouLinux secara muktamad”. * The dailybuild page has been updated [1] with a link to « live » dailybuilds. * The developer's page “How to generate a CD/USB image” has been updated too [2]. * I implemented an algorithm to automatically put online the nighly snapshot of our Spip website (work copy) [3][4]. It is not activated yet because still under test. If our project is accepted, we'll have to make a comprehensive list of our development wishes to be presented there, on our stand. We'll need graphic design for our posters too ;). * I recall that Salvatore launched the translation of our Wikipedia article into English [2]. The idea is to split the effort among several translators who understand Latin languages. Unfortunately we're still lacking of volunteers :(. * Salvatore is still monitoring our DistroWatch ranking [3]. * Nava posted about us :) [4]. * Oleg created our Google+ account [5].
