Today I was thinking about this issue :), installing without an Internet
connection. It seems we can strip the dependencies down by rewriting
small parts of the installer, in which case this would mean we could
ship the whole installer on CD/DVD. This would let people use the same
CD/DVD or copies to install DDL on many computers without the need of
Internet.

I also talked today with Fayçal about this issue and told him that
having a DDL version on a single CD instead of a small DVD can still be
interesting for very old computers. I imagine that in the worst case, if
the installer really can't fit on a single CD, it would be on a future,
larger DVD that would ship more applications and all the languages
(while CD's would still be monolingual). That said, installing on a very
old computer would still require an Internet connection so this is not
perfect.

On the other hand, as of writing, there are also two uses of the
Internet connection *during* the installation process:

- to guess the computer country and timezone (using the connection IP)
- to install Grub2 which is not on the CD/DVD

The first use is optional (the user knows his country and timezone!),
and the second one should be easily solved by pre-installing grub2 on
every CD.

Stay tuned!
