Yes in 2003 this is what I have experienced with outlook. Outlook express has actualy quite good IMAP support.

If I'm wrong about 2003 I would like to know where I was going wrong!

As far as I can see on my network, Thunderbird 2.x and Outlook Express 6.x and 7.x both show IMAP folders according to the Dovecot "subscriptions" file, with no further user intervention needed.

Outlook may be different.
