I hope I can explain it... Let's see... One of the problems with using the IE-governed mechanisms to open new windows (createPopup, et al) is that IE security gets in the way, and shows the yellow bar in XP SP2.
By building our own popup window mechanism, we can control the security settings for the window with very high granularity, like I managed to do for the new deskbar.
Oh, and to address the last question, the prototypical implementation I have in place is used something like this:
var w = new ActiveXObject("DQSDHost.WindowLauncher");
w.OpenWindow("Title", "http://www.dqsd.net");This launches a new window and loads content from dqsd.net.
I think maybe we should make the window launcher non-creatable to prevent other apps from using it, but it's a start anyway.
