I use the Tabbrowser Extensions extension in Firebird to force links to
open in the same Firebird window, but in new tabs. It's kind of an
extreme solution to the problem, but it does work. (Of course, it means
that even popup windows open in the same window as a new tab, which is
weird, but, whatever...)

Nice. I use these extensions too. That looks like a good workaround for me.
I looked at setting the options and clicked new links and javascripts
windows in new tabs. I closed Firebird & reopened. I have reuse set to 0.
But I still get the same problem with new searches opening in the current
tab. Is this the setup you have?

Cheers, Tom.

Tom,

I just installed Firefox (the new version of Firebird). So I decided to try different settings to see if I could make this work better. I have the following dqsd settings:
reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0;
launchmode=1;
And to make sure that all dqsd searches, as well as urls opened from other programs, would open in a new tab, I used the following instructions (Shawn also mentioned these):
http://texturizer.net/firefox/tips.html#beh_reuse

I've also checked "New windows opened by JavaScript" in the Tabbrowser Extensions preferences, unfortunately, javascript popup windows (when I allow them) are still opening in new tabs rather than popup windows. But as I said before, I can live with this, as long as all pages opened by external programs, dqsd included, are opening in new tabs, which they are :)
