I like your solution putting the tinyURL icon on the browser window, that
keeps the steps to a minimum.

Tinyurl www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com will do it, producing a tinyurl
equivalent for www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com But it does it by taking you to
the tinyurl site.

Personally I never use this, and prefer to add the tinyurl button to
the IE links toolbar. Clicking on it while within any page will
produce the tinyurl equivalent for that page. See instructions for
doing this at http://tinyurl.com/.
