By the way, in case any of you haven't tried out the new Wicks online
catalog/order site, the URL is http://www.wicks.com/aircraft/ which is
somewhat different than where they used to be parked.
Advantages over Aircraft Spruce's online catalog:
1. Inventory currently on-hand is displayed, so you know immediately if
your parts will be backordered
2. Nearly all of their total catalog is online, compared to Aircraft
Spruce's very few parts. Some examples of the things that are missing:
3/4" Azusa wheel bearings are missing, but the 5/8" bearings are there.
2032/3660-G gallon epoxy kit is missing, but the Quart kit is there.
Disadvantages over Aircraft Spruce's online catalog:
1. No pictures to speak of. The ones that are there are tiny.
2. It takes a while to navigate to the desired item, as you creep through
the branches of the catalog tree. You can, however, shortcut this process
once you know what page a particular product is on. See #5 below.
3. No descriptions. Each page is formatted as a table of products straight
from their inventory database. Thus, each product gets about a 30 byte
description line and that's it. Use your printed catalog if you want to
understand how something works.
4. No secure ordering yet. They use e-mail, which is not secure at all.
Furthermore, they confirm your order by sending you back another e-mail
which once again spells out your charge card number... not a very smart
idea, although the chances of your CC info being stolen are very very
remote to begin with. Aircraft Spruce uses secure, encrypted order entry
with absolutely zero chances of being stolen.
5. Frames. <gasp> My all-time, most despised, hated feature of HTML.
However, you can still bookmark favorite catalog pages if you use your
RIGHT mouse button to add it to the favorites folder, instead of the LEFT
button. Then it takes you directly to that page, displaying it without
frames.
