The Navy used to teach the use of the standard issue hunting knife to break through
the canopy of a
submerged jet. The knife is held with two hands, blade pointing upward, and thrust
sharply upward
into the canopy. I had occasion to break out of an F-9 Panther canopy and it works
surprisingly
well. Did I mention that this was part of a safety stand down demonstration. I flew
the big round
engines off carriers, not jets, but was selected at random to give the demonstration.
