Marel. Yes, there she was. Clen could see her moonlit face as she slept in his old
bed. The room around her was unkept, things were bad, very bad.

And to him alone, she had another name. Pookies. He wrote it in the layer of frost on
the window with his fingernail.

A part of him felt as though he wanted to be human again, to know what it must like to
curl up next to his wife and forget about the world. But that part of him was
shrinking. It had become a shadow of a shadow.

Suddenly, he felt his mission growing within his bones, there it was, clear as the
daylight that began to peek around of the horizon. He must fly north.

He opened one hand and produced his old rank insignia, a tiny golden boar, and placed
it gently on the railing of the balcony. Its warmth melted the snow around it. He
gave the window a loud pound, almost enough to break it, then took flight into the
winter sky.

He knew he must go north to Vekkelmaril.
