Isles of Myst Brookshire
"Trust me Captain, this is -exactly- what you need." The elderly Odelia Shinklesofinn insisted on still calling him that as she patted his hand and then latched her wrinkled bony fingers around the young man's forearm with a vise-like grip rather comparable to the strength of a warrior. The woman prattled on as she dragged him across the Brookshire village square in the broad light of the afternoon. "You've been through a rough spot, everyone has those...you've got to get right back in there and try again...come on now, don't be shy..." Of course, what rumors she'd heard or hadn't heard about former Royal Guard Captain Rue Denali and what actual amount of truth there was to any of it, was anyone's guess, but Odelia knew a good-looking island bachelor when she saw one. Nevermind what the new Lord Marshall had to say. And Rue let her tug him along like an overgrown lost puppy into the Brookshire branch of the WOS. He felt as if he was a victim of a two-for-one blow just now. For still grasped tightly in his hand was the ornate scroll-case, complete with ribbons fluttering in the breeze, from the Duke of Brookshire himself, Darell Branton. He had not yet a chance to open it and read the contents within, but Rue was certain it could only mean one thing: He was being asked to vacate, remove his presence from the Duke's sprawling, friendly, countryside property. No doubt his "oathbreaking" bones were not appreciated in the vicinity any longer, regardless of what widow Shinklesofinn thought. And if his fear was true, Rue would be in a very sorry state indeed. "Now, dear, here, just put your name down here...and see lower down, just answer those few questions. And don't forget to list your best attributes." Another pat on the hand, "Don't be shy...it's all for charity." Rue blinked, his dark eyes focusing on the parchment and the quill that had been pressed into his hand. Are you a bachelor? He paused, thought dejectedly of those once in his life then wrote, ~Yes, quite, unfortunately.~ Are you wanted for any crimes committed on the Isles? ~Not at this time.~ Odelia turned from Rue to help a mother and child who came into the office with a question, and Rue felt a sense of relief but only for a fleeting moment. What are your best features? Your ideal evening? He stared at the remaining questions, his vision blurring, his hand shaking a bit and causing drops of ink to pool. Hounds of hell, he had to get out of there! He blinked rapidly, wetting his lips as he thought quickly and etched out a few words. Rue left without a word, a sheen of sweat beading up on his temples. Rue reached for the tin case in his pocket and walked on down the street to The Hart pub, the Duke's scroll still clutched in his grasp. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives & Other DMI Lists: http://islesofmyst.com/lists.php3
