GRUBBAL MUST GO
Isnt it time dear readers that the state suspended this twisted sport and
investigated the underground goings on of its players and fans. A long of
players submitted to us are opium addicts, given the drug for injuries by
their healers and coaches, the effects of the drug are used to enhance their
Grubball performance and cheat. Rue Denali, midfielder for Mysthaven is
said to be hopelessly addicted to the drug. Rue was kidnapped, tortured,
and held for ransom for two weeks by raiders in December, his wounds
wouldn't heal and he was given opium at the infirmary to ease the pain. His
tragic addiction has led to his losing two lovers and his job. Sources in
the team have told us that Rue wants to crush Anika into the Molentia
Circle - out of jealousy for her skill in grubball or because he lusts for
her? both? Indeed in recent games he throws himself upon this woman, taking
any excuse to rub against her in prelude to fornications. We also have a
disturbing story that Kota, hero of the sport loving public is taking bribes
to deliberately lose games. A shameful syndicate is bribing him to fake
injuries and take a dive during crucial matches so they can clean up on
gambling and cheat the innocent sporting citizen from their few coppers
placed in wager on a winning game. Lynching is too good for these brigands,
Grubball must be halted at once and investigated.

Rue rubbed at his bloodshot eyes as he made his way downstairs from his
rented room above the tavern. It was early afternoon and as several heads
turned to watch him, he arched a brow. That was more notice then he usually
garnered of late. Rue had grown accustomed to coming and going without much
notice, since his days as Captain around here. People finally stopped asking
him to help them solve mysteries and crimes. They finally stopped saying
"There's Captain Denali..."

He nodded in a general sense to the room and distractedly made his way to
the bar where his customary mug of bitter black brew beckoned him, the only
way a comforting drug could.

"So, uh...what's it like?" Will, the barkeep and son of the proprietor
asked, leaning on his elbows and waiting for any word to fall from Rue's
lips.

Rue stared back blankly. Was this another flippin' hallucination? If it was,
it wasn't very exciting. He much preferred the dancing rats and flying
plates of pie. Besides, he hadn't taken a swig of laudanum since yesterday.

Will frowned a bit. "Aw, come on man, give us poor blokes a bit of a crumb
eh?"

Rue spread his hands on the bar, and glanced to the others who were eagerly
awaiting his words as well. "Will, what in the name of the demon's elbows
are you chattering on about?"

Will sighed, and another patron pushed the Drachian news rag down the bar
toward Rue. "The Goddess...what's it like to be with the Goddess?"

Rue frowned a bit. The Goddess? He glanced to the newsprint and then his
eyes widened. Oh holy donkey shit! He frowned over the bit about the
accusations of throwing games, but then he slapped a hand over his chest and
laughed a bit sadly. Ah, dear Anika - his good friend whom he hadn't tussled
with! Wonder what she would say about this?

He glanced back at the eager faces of the few local farmers and merchants.
It seemed as though they'd surely be disappointed to hear the truth,
wouldn't they?

"Ah lads...I assure you, once you've been with the Goddess, you can die a
truly happy man..."

Would that satisfy, he wondered? And after a moment, the men all agreed in a
chorus of springtime testosterone and began to chortle on about the divine
beauty of a woman's body.

Rue swiftly glanced down to his mug and dragged it up to his twisted lips to
take a bitter sip. Indeed, he would never die a happy man. And Rue's
thoughts drifted and swirled further.

A brief (un-updated) background on Rue Denali:

"It sounds cold, but it's not cold," he explains. "I mean, what the truth
in life is, you need failures, you need tough times to get any kind of
value on what's important to you and what's not. There's no way around it."
