Jaref Thoran stepped into his room at the Dragonmyst
Inn and let out a sigh. He immediately pulled his
green traveler's pouch off of his shoulder and set it
down on the chair next to him before flopping down on
the bed face-first.
There was a tired moan from the green pouch and he
heard a familiar rattling sound.
"Go back to sleep," growled Jaref through his
pillow, "There's been a change of plans."
"What?" came Suldio's sleepy voice from inside the
pouch, "Now, Jaref, we had an agreement..."
"I know, I know," Jaref rolled over, "We'll get your
toe. But something's come up that I have to deal with
now, alright?"
The room was silent for few moment except for the
occasional rattlings within the green pouch. Jaref
slowly started to settle into a doze.
  "Jaref," Suldio finally said
Jaref was ripped from sleep. "What what?"
"What is it that you have to deal with?" Suldio's
voice bore a hole into Jaref's skull.
"My brother," Jaref mumbled as he rolled to his
side, turning away from Suldio, "He's missing."
"Oh," Suldio said as he shifted within the pouch
again, "I guess that would be a more immiediate
problem than mine, wouldn't it? Alright, fine, as
long as it's an emergency."
"Okay thanks," grunted Jaref, "And I said we'll find
your damn toe soon enough. Go back to sleep, will
you? I'll wake you up later."
"You know it doesn't work that way, Jaref," scolded
Suldio, "Why don't I wander around this place while
you sleep? You look terrible."
"Bad idea," Jaref grumbled, "We're in an inn full
of people in a rather well-travelled part of the
woods. If you go wandering around here we'll both get
in trouble."
"I could wear the cloak," whined Suldio.
"That's not exactly convincing, is it?" snarled
Jaref.
"Grouchy, grouchy," Suldio said quietly, "C'mon,
Jaref, I can't very well stay jumbled up in here the
whole time, can I?"
Jaref shot upright and let out a sigh as he inched
over to the chair beside his bed and grabbed the
straps of the pouch. He pulled it from the back of
the chair and turned it upside-down, dumping its
contents onto the floor.
Suldio's skull fell out first and rolled into the
corner of the room and his eye sockets pointed at
Jaref. His arms, legs, ribs, and assorted other bones
spilled out immediately afterwards, laying on the
floor like a gruesome jigsaw puzzle. The plain burlap
cloak fell out of the pouch last and covered most of
Suldio.
The cloak quickly rose into the air as a bone thin
figure filled itself into it. The tips of Suldio's
finger bones appeared from the inside of the sleaves
and the hood fell back to reveal Suldio's horrible
face. Despite having seen this spectacle many times,
Jaref looked upon it with tired entertainment.
"Don't talk to anyone this time," Jaref said as he
lay back down on the bed and rolled over, "You'll get
me burned at the stake."
Suldio's foot bones rattled against the wooden floor
for a few steps and he paused at the door. "Can I
borrow your boots?"
"Gods!" Jaref buried his head under his pillow,
"Yes, yes, just let me sleep!" He kicked his boots
off and let them fall to the ground near Suldio.
Jaref fumbled with a boots for a moment, then opened
the door and stepped out.
"Night Jaref," he said as he shut the door behind him.
