She growled in frustration and let off a string of curses that were enough
to even make Dora blush. "Why the hell won't he leave me alone? I didn't get
any sleep last night. Can you believe he came back a second time? And I
think he was drunk!" Caelan Rainier yanked on her thick braid in anger as
she lifted it to wrap about the crown of her head. She never really got much
sleep anyhow. Ever since her kidnapping she's been afraid of the dark, and
every little noise that happened in it. She had nightmares nearly every
night, and this just added to her irritations.

"Cael, relax... the boy's got a crush, that's all. It's flattering," Dora
sat on the edge of the other woman's bed, swinging her slippered feet idly
above the floor. She talked to Cael through her reflection in the mirror at
the dresser she stood in front of. "Is it really so bad? He's quite
attractive," the redheaded young woman tilted her head, and scrunched her
pert little nose with a coy smile.

"Then you have a go at him," Cael paused in setting her hair to fumble for a
pin. "I'm really not interested. As far as I'm concerned, he can take a
flying leap off of--"

"He likes -you-!" Dora interrupted. "When was the last time that's happened
to you? -Has- that happened to you?"

Dora had always been blunt, and never all that kind. Caelan bit down upon
her lower lip as she pinned the long braid neatly to her head, choosing to
hold her tongue before she might embarrass herself further. Dora was right.
She'd never had this before. She wasn't one who was normally noticed, let
alone sought after. She was beginning to believe that she would be here
forever, and end up like the head maid. Old, unmarried, and bitter.
Wandering the halls with a perpetual scowl and grey hair tugged into a
severe bun. Only a cat as a friend, and people snickering or making fun of
her at every turn. Her hands fell away from her hair as she looked at
herself in the mirror, studied the crease of her brow, and the pale, almost
gaunt features of her face. She hadn't had much of an appetite for some time
now, and she saw little reason to laugh.

"Take advantage of it, Cael..." Dora spoke up behind her, rising from the
bed and walking across the small room. "You need to enjoy life again... get
out of this slump you're in," she set her hands on her shoulders and
continued to look towards their reflection.

"But what does he want with me?" This was the most supportive that Caelan
could remember her being. Any other time, she may have looked towards Dora
with disbelief, but she continued to look at herself critically, her lips
twisting slowly into an uncertain frown.

"I have no idea. But it's more then Fox, right?" Dora patted her arm and
smiled her coy, half smile.

Caelan may have expected as much. Always one step forward and two steps back
with her. Dora received a glare for the comment, before she returned to
staring at herself in the mirror. "He really is making no secret about this
is he?" she couldn't help but smile slightly.

"No! He's not!" Dora laughed, stepping back from the other girl, "The
bastard's even talked to your brother."

"You're kidding?!" Cael spun about, fixing her with wide eyes.

"No! I'm not... He's a complete nut! But he likes you. And Garrad hasn't
killed him yet. I heard that he's even asked him for advice."

"Asked Gary for advice? About me?" Caelan couldn't help but laugh at that.
She could just picture Flynn trying to charm ideas out of Garrad. The man
just didn't give up.

"Cael..." Dora paused to look more seriously at her friend, "You know that
Fox hasn't done a thing. He's hopelessly in love with Janessa."

Caelan's laughter trailed off, and her blue eyes dropped to the carpeted
floor. Everyone else knew it was true but her. She just didn't want to let
herself believe that. Her slippered toe absently dragged across the
patterned carpet as she thought.

After a moment, she cleared her throat as she began to walk away, "Excuse
me, Dora ... there's some things I need to see to."
