The RF performance is certainly outstanding, but I think, and it might just be my ears, that poor receive audio is the achilles heel of the entire 7 line. It might have been fine in its day, but compared to what came before the 7 line, and what came after the 7 line, it's just not very good ...
I still have a TR7A and a TR5, and when I want to play with a solid state Drake, I always go for the TR5. I can listen to it for hours without any fatigue. The TR5 is really an underappreciated radio, one of the best radios drake ever made I think ...
I also confess to a general preference for tube audio ...
