I don't know what audio chip Drake used in the R-7. I know the TR-7 uses the LM380 while the TR-5 uses the TDA2002 aka LM383. The TDA2002/LM383 has substantially better specs and performance. This is the same chip many Drake users are familiar with as it was a very popular mod for the R-4C. Subsequently that chip was discontinued and has been replaced with an even better one, the TDA2003. In fact my Yaesu FT-920 has one of them and it is the finest audio of all my rigs. The LM380 was state of the art in its day but as you so well put it, what came before and after was much better.
