John,

I agree with Rocco's comments, however, I would add this:

Be sure you are adjusting the passband tuning slugs on the square can at the center rear of the rig. Don't attempt adjustment (yet) of the rack of slugs at the left side of the rig (viewed from the front).

Actual adjustment of the tuning rack should be your last ditch effort. I have aligned /repaired several Drake Recievers in various states of repair (or disrepair) and have never needed to fool around with the rack slugs.

PS:

I've got my new K2 up and running! Just installed the audio filter this morning. Next step is the 100 watt PA mod.

John,

First, make certain that you are operating the controls properly - esp the
passband tuning and bandwidth - since they interact. Next, check the
physical position of the passband tuing knob - sometimes they have been
removed/replaced - just a few degrees can make a big difference. See if
there is a position that makes sense with regards to opposite sideband
suppression - then loosen the setscrew, move the knob (not the shaft) and
see if this new position works for all modes, paying attention to the curved
lines and dots.

If this does not do the trick, you should align the reciever per the manual,
paying particular attention to section 6.4.8. Follow the directions
precisely, especially regarding the exact position of the knob with respect
to the curved lines on the panel. I have found that every one of the R4
series receivers I have bought required a careful alignment of the passband
tuner. The difference after alignment was like magic. Caution - moving the
passband tuner slugs is very tricky. They are fragile. The tips can
sometimes rotate, but not the actual springy shaft. I use a needle nose
plier GENTLY to make sure the shafts are actually rotating (you should be
able to see them move in and out as you rotate) and hear the difference in
the speaker. Then I use a small alligator clip to grab the tips after the
shafts move freely; you could try the alligator clip first to see if does
the trick. The alligator clip works pretty well to allow you to adjust the
passband tuning properly. You should repeat this several times as needed
for consistent results. Warning - the tuning components are fragile and
difficult to replace.

The directions in the manual are good, but this is a very challenging part
of the alignment for some - read it over several times if you have never
done it before.

When aligned, these receivers sound much tighter and are wonderful to listen
to. If this alignment fails to produce those results, you might have
component problems in the passband tuing section. That can be a real bear.

I am sure others on the list who have tried this alignment would have more
to say about the subject.

Good luck.

Subject: [drakelist] R-4B both sidebands...second try

I noticed my first post on this went out in HTML format instead of plain
text...oops. Let me try again...

When tuning through a CW signal on the R-4B I am hearing the carrier about
equal strength on both sides of center...what is the best procedure to
correct this?

Thanks,

John K7FD
