Gary,
Thanks fro the reply,
Ok, that explains the ball bearing unit and I counted the pot at ~10 turns to where I felt the torque change so it seems ok.
I am still confused by the procedure in the manual. On the schematic I see three adjustable components around the carrier oscillator.
R-21 and C-17 which are marked on the top of the chassis as "carrier balance" and then there is C-6 which I believe is the small trimmer cap located on the CAR-OSC circuit board under the chassis. In the manual at section 3.9 it states to adjust R-21 and C-6 for minimum signal on the other receiver. Is C-6 the carrier null capacitor that you refer to? If so, then when does C-17 come into play? I see no reference in the manual to adjust C-17. However I do see in section 5.9 that C-6 is used to adjust the carrier oscillator frequency to 5645 kHz. Based on it's location in the circuit it seems to me that C-17 would be the carrier null and C-6 would be a freq trimmer for the oscillator itself.

Mike,
The pot has a ball reduction drive and is multiturn. It will slip when it
reaches the limits..this is normal. Tune the T4XC up on 20 meters as an
example, plug in a mic, turn the MIC GAIN fully CCW, and key the mic. Tune
in the 20 meter transmit frequency on another receiver ( or a scope coupled
to the antenna jack ) and adjust the carrier null capacitor for minimum
signal.
