Tom Hammond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterence to the drakelist gang ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Gerry:
Well, it's not much of a turkey... works pretty well, I'd say. And, so far, parts ARE available... though, as you have noted, there have been some substitutions...NOT the fault of the author though... manufacturers often discontinue one product only to replace it by a compatible, generally better, component.
The author of the article has some good notes on his web site at:
http://www.geocities.com/hagtronics/r4.html
And I have some construction notes which might help builders on my web site at:
http://www.n0ss.net/drake_het_osc_xtal_elim_notes.pdf
In fact, I just (today) updated them a bit.

You're welcome to try and build this turkey. It's a turkey because several critical components are no-longer available. I was going to build 2 units. Whenever I get desperate enough this winter, I'll finish one of them. I had a whole list of substitutes on this project. The shaft encoder is one. Get in touch with the author of the article for a more complete list of substitutions.

Subject: [drakelist] I want to build the R-4C 'Crystal Eliminator' Update Please!
Hi all Drake folks,
A while back there was a lot of issues / discussions about the article and building of the Drake Crystal lininator by Steven Hageman.
I wan to either buy one of these or build one myself...
Two things:
1) I talked with the FAR Circuits guy today at the Ft. Wayne, IN hamfest.
I asked him about the poor quality boards some have spoken about, he said 'YES' the first ones were poor, and he has redone the boards so they are good now (No, they still don't have through holes plated) HE SAID ANYONE THAT HAS THE OLD BOARD, PLEASE LET HIM KNOW AND HE WILL REPLACE IT FREE!
2) I beleive there was one component in the parts list that was no longer available (The encoder?) Has anyone found a direct replacement or 'What do we do?'
He said if he knew the details of the encoder operation (I told him I thought that was the no longer available part) he may be able to find a way to do it with other parts.
He has 'kits' available this week end for $46.
PLease update me on the status of this 'poject'
