I think what Gary was referring to was the tendency (initially (?)) on EBay to take a perfectly good example of a radio, or whatever, and break it up into pieces, "auctioning" each piece separately. Like most products that have a need for replacement parts, pieces of radios almost always sell for more than the whole. How many C Lines have we seen with the receiver in one auction, the transmitter in another, power supply in another, speaker in another, interconnecting cables in another, each manual in others, etc. Or boards "from a fully functional TR-7" offered a piece at a time. I fully expect that once one of these clowns figure out that the tubes just unplug, we'll see the tubes individually as well!! If a unit is defective in some manner that makes it unreasonable to repair, such as a bad power transformer, melted wiring harness, severely bent chassis / panel, etc., then yes, it should be made a donor so that others may live! A "rare" piece, such as a 1-A might be worth repairing even major damage like this, but the 4 series is still plentiful enough to allow an occasional sacrifice of a severely injured example.

But to part out a perfectly good example of a piece of thirty or forty or fifty year old American manufactured equipment is just WRONG..... We've already lost the lead in technology, and thanks to our education "system?" we're losing our future as well. Let's at least not destroy the remaining examples that show what we were once capable of producing.

I have to disagree Gary.... With old radios that you can no longer buy parts for.... Parting out a radio is a good thing. Perhaps YOU will need a part that is no longer available anywhere except from an old radio.

Would you part out the radio you have or just throw it away? If there were no parts radios, your's would sit un-repaired forever.

You can't have it both ways!

Have you ever seen an auto wrecking yard? I bet there are some very nice vehicles in there that were perfectly good at one time.

You're logic makes no sense.

Rick,
Your correct Ebay is not the problem, the sellers are. But making a living from it by re-selling equipment that is purchased at hamfests, auctions, or estate sells and never even taking the time to wipe off the dust or plug it in is. On top of that add ridiculous packing and handling fees and over charging for shipping. Its still based on greed and too many or making a living form it. I don't approve of the tactics being used buy the big sellers. The average guy that wants to get rid of an unused piece of ham equipment that he has owned and used personally I have no problem with. Taking perfectly good radios and parting them out to make more money to me is plain sick. Sorry I personally have been burnt on ebay many times. Its unfortunate that if you want anything used anymore you have to resort to using ebay. The hamfests are on their way out as are the swap nets. I don't mean to ramble and I don't want to start a long thread of pros / cons but there are a lot of self serving not so honest folks on ebay. And Rick I praise you for your positive feedback, many sellers are honest. But the guy that buys your item to just turn it for a profit is probably not going to complain......enough said
