Craig Roberts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In asnwer to a question from a Drakelist buddy:

The resurrection of this TR-4C's operation (except for the frequency shift problem that remains) was the result of carefully cleaning the very dirty bandswitch with a syringe and DeOxit -- applying a drop of the cleaner to each contact..

Cleaning the tube sockets in this machine seemed to have no effect, but doing the same thing on many other radios -- including a TR-4 I just finished restoring -- has improved performance dramatically. I use tiny interdental brushes (available in your pharmacy's toothpaste aisle) dipped in DeOxit to scrub out the inside of the socket pins. I also clean the tube pins themselves by wiping with DeOxit or, in the case of really dirty ones, burnishing them with a three-way nail buffer. The nail buffer, which can be had for about a buck or two at your drug store, is one of the handiest devices in my tool chest. It can be used to gently clean and polish metal and plastic and smooth edges, too.

Backing off and re-tightening al mounting screws in a radio can also cure problems. That is something I have not yet done completely on my "new" TR-4C. Oh - by the way -- I get a "roaring" noise sometimes when the TR-4C shifts frequency. I suppose a tube might be intermittent. The "undercarriage" of this radio indicates that -- other than re-tubing and the relay swap years ago -- it's never been serviced.
