Thanks to all that contributed to my query about the mic gain setting on
the T-4XB.
I am pretty sure it was pretty close all along, but it seems to work a
little better. Here's what I did:
First, I made sure all the contacts on switches involving the audio path
were extra clean!
Second, I did reheat all solder connections along the audio path, checked
the capacitor and 47k inline resistor.
Third, I used contact cleaner on both the vintage mic plug and jack. No
chance for added resistance!
The proof of the pudding, thanks to another great suggestion by Garey
K4OAH, was to couple my oscilloscope to the RF output, tune up and set the
scope to show as wide a band as possible, and then speak through the
microphone to observe the height of the voice peaks compared to the single
tone. Sure enough, I am getting full output on peaks. Nice and clean
looking too!
I was surprised at how little difference there was from about the 12
o'clock position on the mic gain and 'wide open'. Obviously the ALC is
agressive and effective, as the signal never 'flat topped'.
The owner of the rig was able to listen to it today from across the
country (Oregon to Florida) and was delighted at how it sounded. I will
be sending it back to him, fully ready to continue serving the hobby.
