There is an error in the R7 alignment instructions in the R7 service manual.  If someone ever followed these instructions on your or Everet's R7 in the past, the R7 would sound just as you described.

I have the correction to the instructions at home.   Right now I'm traveling and can't get to them for a week.  Once I'm back home, I'll look it up and send it to you.
