From your description I'm assuming you're referring to a mechanical hum
from the AC-4.
The transformer is normally pretty quiet, although being dropped might
have knocked a lamination or two loose. I would go through and
retighten all the mounting hardware to make sure that is not the
problem. A piece of plastic or wood, rod or tubing held to the ear and
the other end touched to different areas of the power supply can
sometimes tell you where the hum is originating.
The other possibility is that the filter caps are leaky, quite likely if
they are originals, increasing the load on the transformer.
Realistically, if they are that leaky the fuse will blow at full power,
IF the fuse is the correct 6 1/4 A slow-blo type. If the capacitors are
original, it's probably good preventative maintenance to replace them.
The AC-4R power supply rebuild kit from Mike Bryce is a good investment
and a well designed product. Certainly, if you do nothing else to the
power supply, replace the Bias supply filter caps. They are the one
weak link that can destroy a transmitter if they fail, even if it's left
in Standby.

I just acquired a well loved T4X/R4B w/AC4. I've been using them about
a week now and really love the sound of the T4X on CW. Something
unique about the tone of the T4X series? Still working on the R4B
whichs needs lots of care.
OK, my question is ...can the hum from the AC4 be reduced? It seems
loud? Maybe I've been using solid state rigs for too long?
Unfortunately this particular AC4 was dropped during shipment and one
corner of the case was shoved in but after close inspection it appears
to be only cosmetic. That is nothing inside was damaged at as far as I
can tell from visual inspection. Thoughts?
