Hi,
I'm in the process of restoring a tube receiver, not a Drake so I'll not
mention it further here. It uses 5 tubes and a few semiconductors.
Though the tubes test good and work fine I like to have a spare set on
hand if possible. No problem, on a shopping trip into the city today
with the xyl perusing her interests I managed a good hour rumaging
through the shops in that part of Bangkok where electronic components
are traded. All but one of the five tubes were available at the first
shop and the fifth at the second. Whilst looking I made a note of some
of the tubes they had 'in stock'
5763 7360 6BA6 6BE6 6AV6 6AQ5 6U8A 6BH6 6BZ6 6CB6 6BL8 6BM8 12BY7 12BA6
12AU7 12AX7 12AT7 5U4 5R4
and assorted others,
7 pin, 9 pin and octal bases together with assorted other bits and
pieces of interest, large oil filled capacitors, big wire wound
resistors etc.
I can think of at least four good tube shops across the city, one has a
large number of 6146's, mostly A's and W's, at another I bought a pair
of RCA 6JB6's. I have found pretty much everything with one or two
exceptions for everything used on the B/C line and the S line KWM2A etc.
3-500's and 8874's are however sadly lacking it seems.
Of course these are all 'old stock' but it is nice to be able to pick
them up as required. I wonder how much longer.

I just got my C-line out of storage. I wanted spare tubes and I had no
problem finding tubes at places like tubedepot.com and rfparts.com.
There seems to be still a large market for tubes. Most are new old
stock but Russia and China still make some transmitting and audio
tubes. The 6JB6 is the trickiest. They are not being made anymore.
They are still available, but to get a matched set with confidence is
expensive.

Perhaps a stupid question...but...I'll ask anyway. All of the
various tubes that have been used in the various Drake gear during
their 'tube' era, are these tubes still in production somewhere? Or
are all the tubes on e-Bay, this list and various others sources all
new-old-stock, used, etc??
Just wondering.
