Some of the people who run those firewalls are real idiots and some of the managers even bigger idiots. In one place I was at, we couldn't access a university data base in Massachusetts because the software was looking at the second, third, and fourth letters of the aforementioned state which was part of the website. I think it was UMASS.ORG or something like that. Some companies are limiting web access to a few individuals and connection to a list of "approved web sites". Fortunately I don't have that problem where I now work.
