The Power box and the Antenna switch tend to get separated from the
controller over the years, especially if there is an estate involved.
As a result, a set of all three pieces with a working clock tend to be
pretty high. Add to that the fact that it was a very expensive unit
when new ($395 in the early 70s), there just weren't a whole lot of them
made. Consider what $20 MS-4 speakers sell for these days, for the same
reason, i.e., many hams already had a speaker that would work, and $20
was half a day's pay for many! The clock is the same one that is in the
old Penwood-Numechron "TV" clocks that a lot of hams adopted because
they were *DIGITAL* , a rare thing in the 60s. They tend to have
motors with shorted turns, which can be rewound if you are handy. E* is
almost always the highest price for anything, but you will find things
that don't surface elsewhere. As for $500, you just have to decide how
bad you want it! :-) Ron's price survey has the C-4 at and average of
$490, for a total of 14 units. The low was $250 and the high $760. I
don't know if he considers "complete" units only, (unlikely,) so the
$250 could possibly be artificially low.
The Power unit would not be all that difficult to replicate, since it
consists of a controller (relay) and a bunch of outlets. The antenna
box is a different animal though, with a motor driven rotary switch.
You could probably configure a group of relays and some logic to make a
"remote" unit that could be controlled by the C-4.
Anyway, in my experience you can expect to pay between $250-350 for a
basic unit in good condition but with no accy's. A complete unit could
easily run $500 or more. That doesn't mean you won't find a complete
set at a yard sale for $25, but that never happens to me or anyone I
know! :-)
