The HR mag article has issues. I spoke with the author some time back, and he was not interested in being a technical resource for an out of date article. BTW He is not being difficult, just honest.

I did however get him to send me updates that he had done with the agreement that I would not "bother" him. I am sure I have them on a CD somewhere. I however have taken the path of TR7 for "all band" and the twins for "ham band" work.

The issues included a variac diode that is not longer able to be found, and spurs (I think) 100 Kc either side of the frequency that were generated. I think there are variacs that are usable (requires a large min to max cap ratio), but the spurs are still a problem. So consider this one a less then desirable solution.
