In addition to restoring old Porsche's, Chris-Crafts and mouths (I'm a dentist)...I also restore old radios....this discussion about the expensive slotted vs the Phillips is curious because we go thru the same arguments when we go to a classic/antique boat show and we overhear the judges argue about what hose clamp or carburator is "correct" for a given year's production of a specific Chris-Craft. Believe it or not, I actually enjoy getting into the nitty gritty's of restoration myself....but sometimes, we need to remember...it's the radios that bring us together....and ultimately...it's people that are most important--men who are crazy about Drakes (and, in my case, Heathkits too...) and it's the radios that create the fellowship. A number of years ago, I found myself getting angry that I couldn't find the slotted, 1/4 long screws that hold the final amplifer cages together in the Heathkit SB-line transmitters and tranceivers--I settled for Phillips versions and thought I had comprimised. Honestly guys, I think it's ok to comprimise a little bit....

A bit tongue in cheek,

Sure enough, the description does say "Steel Type 4140 Hardened Alloy Steel." Further down, it says "Rockwell Hardness Minimum C40." These screws are obviously for some special, probably military or space, application.

The closest thing they have that is reasonably priced is the phillips head version for which I paid $5.28 for a box of 100.

And the Phillips head version wins by quantity 99!!!

Personally, I'll go with the Phillips version. While a straight-head screw is original, I'm not too concerned about that for a rig I use every day; as long as the cover stays on and the screw looks reasonably correct, I'm a happy camper.
