But I bet you'd never have to buy another set..... No more chipped slots.... No more scratched paint...... At least on the screw heads!

Guys,

I spoke with a McMaster-Carr sales rep on the telephone about this very issue several months ago. He told me that the slotted screw is made from specially hardened steel and was indeed $5-something EACH at the time.

Sure enough, the description does say "Steel Type 4140 Hardened Alloy Steel." Further down, it says "Rockwell Hardness Minimum C40." These screws are obviously for some special, probably military or space, application.

The closest thing they have that is reasonably priced is the phillips head version for which I paid $5.28 for a box of 100.

Dick,
McMaster-Carr had a RIDICULOUS price, like $5.60 EACH on the web site, and when questioned, said "that was the price, and checked correct". I gave up after that. I am SURE that was for a box of 50 or 100, but couldn't get them to budge. Just search for pan head, slotted 1/4", black oxide screws and you should find them. They may have "sobered up" by now, but it didn't look good for the Pakistani operatives answering their emails!!
