Hi, Carey. First, as an aside, I stock new 125 uF @ 450V twist-lock cans if that's the type you're interested in.

As far as the differences in values they are generally not of concern. The reason is that back when the can-caps were used in production, a typical tolerance specified might be 20 uF plus 80% or minus 20%. So in this instance you could have a cap with as high as 36 uF or as low as 16 uF and it would still be within spec.

Today, the tolerances are much tighter. A garden variety 22 uF cap will be plus or minus 20% so that it's highest could be 26.4 uF or its lowest at 17.6 uF.

The rule of thumb for the industry is 10 replaces 10, 22 replaces 20, 33 replaces 30, 47 replaces 50, etc.

As far the decisions on substitutions made within re-cap kits, I can only speak for myself. I have a simple rule of thumb. I ask Garey Barrell! :)

There are certain applications where the replacement cap should be as close to the original spec as possible. In other situations, the factory may have been considering cost instead optimization, so it might be advantageous to increase the capacitance.

And, of course, sometimes we go back to using Tarot cards.

I hope this is of help to you. I'd be interested in hearing what the other fellows have to add.

i have been re-capping my gear. but it seem that the correct values are getting harder to find. lets say i need a 450volt 125uf electrolytic. but the only one i can find is a 100uf would that work? also lets say the difference between the need for a 20uf and a available 22uf. i have bought kits that had substitutions but never really thought about how they made their replacement decision.
