I'm not sure I could tell the difference. I've heard both used on the
air with Drakes. I only have a D-104 with the non-amplified base. You
do not need a mic pre-amp.

I should add the the mic connector is a .206" 3 conductor, not a 1/4 inch 
stereo plug. I remember the Swithcraft 230.

      I use a D-104 with my TR-3 with good reports. Also a 
        Shure 444 will do well. The classics work.
