Hi Bob,

I suspect ARRL still renews the copyrights on the handbooks, but they are very common and usually very reasonable on ebay. Any of the pre-transistor handbooks are great, such as 1950 or even 1946 right after the war. The so-called "West Coast Handbook" or "Editors & Engineers Handbooks" which Bill Orr published are excellent. Those were published well into the 70's and show up regularly. The RCA "Radiotron Designer's Handbook" (1953, I think) is probably the definitive volume, but is in my opinion, doctoral level theory. It is very, very heavy in physics and math. Any of the 1950's military tube theory books are probably best of all because they assume zero background in vacuum tube theory.

Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if there are PDF copies on the internet somewhere of the older
Ham Radio Handbooks that would have tube theory and
the older design theory in them. Or would that still be breaking copyright even
though they are ancient copies?
